As an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Grade-4 Pro Junior, the highest-rated ASP Pro Junior in North America, the event offers considerable ratings points making a wildcard like gold for young talent looking to build their experience and status. This year, the coveted two wildcards have been awarded to up-and-comers 17-year-old Riley Metcalf (San Clemente, CA) and 13-year-old Ian Gentil (Maui, HAW).

“I’m grateful for the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure wildcard, especially because it’s a 4 Star,” said Metcalf. “See you in HB. Hopefully the waves will be good.”

WaveWatch.com, the official forecaster for the event, has predicted contestable conditions for the two-day event. According to forecaster Charlie Fox, “With a stroke of luck, there is hope for locally generated wind waves combined with the awakening of the tropical belt.”

For the event start on Sunday, Fox predicts a S/SW swell mix with increasing S swell late in the day and possibly some tiny sea-breeze lump/wakes from the previous day. Surf heights will be in the 1-3 foot range with occasional chest high sets during optimal tides. Winds will be light and variable early and generally clean. W winds at 10-15 knots will peak mid-afternoon and be a bit choppy. The rising tide in the early a.m. through noon offers the best tidal picture with the cleanest conditions and best consistency.

Day two, on Monday, will see new S/SW swell gradually increasing with very minimal background W wind waves. Surf heights will be slightly larger in the 2-4 foot range with the larger sets more common during optimal tides. Winds will be light and variable early and generally clean. W winds in the 10-15 knot will peak mid-afternoon. The rising tide in the early a.m. through early afternoon will offer the best tidal picture with cleanest conditions and best consistency for the early afternoon finals.

The contest will run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday. Awards will follow.
